Wondering What To Do On A Hawaii Vacation - Part II Of IV: The Island Of Maui



Wonder no more. Check out this See-All Activity Itinerary for the island of Maui, in Hawaii. Designed for the budget, student, and adventure traveler, this is an aggressive itinerary for a first time visit to Maui. The energetic and time-deprived traveler can do this in 3 days but it is highly recommended to add a day or three to each of the days mentioned here. Since this is designed for the budget and adventure-oriented traveler, activities that require money are noted with "$".

Maui, Hawaii See-All Itinerary:

Day 1:

1. From the airport, start driving east along #36, the Hana Hwy.
2. Enjoy the scenery by picking and choosing stops such as at the town of Paia, Hookipa Beach (famous for windsurfing), the plethora of waterfalls & hikes from the road, Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach, Red Sand Beach, Hamoa Beach, and the famous Oheo Gulch aka 7 Sacred Pools.
3. One of the best hikes in Maui can be reached from across the road from the 7 Sacred Pools (2.5-4 hours round trip) $ for parking. This hike is not difficult, with only a few minor climbs in altitude, and offers stunning views of bamboo forests, Maui rainforests, and river-side vistas. The end of the trail offers the reward of a beautiful waterfall and picnic area.

Stay: Vacation rental in Hana.

Day 2:

1. Continue driving around the east coast of Maui, enjoying the beautiful views, rainforests, country towns, and quiet beaches.
2. A good stop before going up to Haleakala Volcano Park $ is the free wine tasting at Tedeschi Winery.

Stay: Camp on Haleakala with the intention of rising early for the famous sunrise or get a vacation rental in Kihei after checking out the Haleakala sunset.

Day 3:

1. Check out the vast beaches of Kihei then cruise down to Big & Little Beach in Makena. Makena also has some snorkeling and views of lava fields.
2. Head up Hwy 31 through Maalaea to Lahaina. Time permitting, check out the resort-surrounded Kaanapali Beach and snorkeling on Black Rock ($ for parking unless you get lucky in the small free lot).
3. Lahaina offers night life, shopping, and one of the best luaus in Hawaii, the Old Lahaina Luau ($ worth a splurge for the cultural experience, reserve in advance or go there hoping for a cancellation). As an alternative, Kihei & Wailuku also offer some nightlife and a lot of dining choices.

Stay: Hostel in Wailuku or condo in Kihei.
